Pecos National Historical Park Pecos, NM 87552(505) 757-7200 |
|
Pecos National Historical Park preserves sites and relics that span over thousands years and come from many different cultures. Some of the oldest visible ruins are from the Pecos Indians who operated a settlement at the site that was home to some 2,000 individuals by the mid-15th century. When the Spanish explorers arrived, so did Christianity, and the ruins of the Mission Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles de Porciúncula de los Pecos can still be seen at the site today. Another piece of history is memorialized at the Gloreta Pass Battlefield where a Civil War battlefield that helped cause the ultimate defeat of the Confederacy occurred. The park actually consists of three distinct sites, though only one of those has public access, the one farthest east and close to the conjunction of I-25 and NM-63.
